Reviewed definition

Wuxing refers to five relational categories or phases—wood, fire, earth, metal and water—historically used to organize correspondences among seasons, directions, governance, music, the body and other phenomena. Xing is closer to movement or phase here and does not necessarily mean five irreducible material elements.

Historical context

From the Warring States through the Han, texts developed several phase sequences and production or conquest cycles, linking them with yin-yang, political legitimacy and calendrical knowledge.

Modern-use note

Modern education can use wuxing to show how Chinese correlative classification organizes complex information. Design and cultural services also borrow its colour, direction and material associations. The sequence, school and purpose should be stated rather than treating symbolism as a universal measurement system.

한국어

Limitations and cross-cultural caution

Five-phase correspondences vary among texts and traditions and should not be merged and advertised as one uniquely correct table. Wuxing is not the chemical periodic table, a medical diagnostic tool or a risk model; health, safety and financial decisions require domain-appropriate evidence.

“Five Elements” is common but can mislead. “Five Phases” or “Five Processes” better preserves the dynamic sense of xing, although the chosen translation should still be defined.
